Origin and history

Spechbach is an archaeological site located in the village of the same name in the Grand Est region. This type of structure, characteristic of the Middle Ages, generally served as a defence point or seigneurial residence. Castral mots were often built on artificial earth elevations, surrounded by ditches, to strengthen their strategic position.

In the Greater East region, the castral mots were part of a network of local fortifications, reflecting the feudal organization of the time. These constructions played a key role in protecting territories and populations, while symbolizing the power of local lords. Their presence often attested to a sustainable human occupation, linked to agricultural or craft activities.
