Origin and history
La Porte de ville de Lembeye is a historic monument located in the municipality of Lembeye, in the department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Dating from the 14th century, this structure is one of the medieval architectural remains still visible today. It was listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 6 December 1984, attesting to its heritage value and the need for its preservation.
The door is located at 2 Rue de la Tour, an approximate address determined by its GPS coordinates. Although the accuracy of its location is considered fair (note of 5/10), it remains a historical landmark for the commune. Property of the town of Lembeye, its current condition and conditions of access (visit, rental, etc.) are not specified in the available sources. The door is referenced in the Merimée base under INSEE 64331, confirming its administrative and geographical anchor.
Available data, especially from the Monumentum platform, highlight its role in the medieval urban landscape. At that time, city gates were generally used as checkpoints and defences for cities. Their presence reflected the strategic importance of communities, often linked to trade or military issues. In the case of Lembeye, this door may have played a similar role, although the sources do not detail its specific use or detailed history.
