Origin and history
The castle of Sury, originally built in the 13th century, was profoundly transformed in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century and then in the 18th century. Its facades, of great simplicity, contrast with its sumptuous interiors, decorated from 1642 by exceptional craftsmen. Lornemanist Germain Baudouin and the sculptor Claude Désiré created panelling, compartmented ceilings, murmured chimneys, baluster galleries and cariatides. These decorations bear witness to a rare artistic know-how for the time, mixing plant motifs, allegorical figures and painted panels.
A fire in 1937 partially ravaged the castle, damaging part of its architectural and decorative heritage. Despite this sinister, several remarkable pieces have been preserved, such as the large living room, summer lounge or library, now protected under the Historic Monuments. These spaces, classified between 1948 and 1963, illustrate the opulence of the 17th century interiors, while the rest of the estate (façades, roofs, commons, orangery) was inscribed in 2011 for its overall heritage value.
Sury Castle is now owned by a private company. Its history reflects the architectural and artistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the modern era, with particular attention to interior decorations, characteristic of the aristocratic residences of the Loire under the Ancien Régime. Its opening to the public (visits, rentals, guest rooms) is not specified in the available sources.
