Origin and history
The three salt attices of the Breno, located in Carnac, Brittany, were built between 1830 and 1840 by the Compagnie des Salines de Carnac, founded during the Restoration. These granite buildings, with blind walls spaced about 100 metres apart, were located on the saline mining dam. Their role was to store the salt collected in the 32 carnations of the site, now disappeared, thus protecting the production of the weather.
These attices illustrate the historical importance of salinity activity in Carnac, a key economic resource for the region. Their functional architecture, adapted to the constraints of salt marshes, reflects the techniques of construction and exploitation in the 19th century. Their location at the heart of the salines emphasized their direct integration into the production process.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1984 for their facades, roofs and uplifts, these buildings are a rare vestige of the salt industry in Brittany. Their preservation makes it possible to understand the spatial and economic organization of the saline, as well as their progressive decline with the disappearance of the carnations. Their present state offers a material testimony of that time, although their location is now considered to be unclear (level 5/10).
