Tower of the building: inscription by order of 24 June 1937

Origin and history

La turret de la rue Geoffroy-Herbert is an iconic pepper tower located in Coutances, in the Manche department, Normandy. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its characteristic architecture of this period, with a cylindrical shape and a conical roof. It is integrated into a house located at number 4 on Geoffroy-Herbert Street, at the corner of a building, making it a remarkable architectural element of local heritage.

The turret was listed as historic monuments on 24 June 1937, recognizing its heritage value. This type of construction, typical of the Renaissance, was often used for defensive or symbolic purposes, reflecting the social status of the owners. Today, it reflects the urban history of Coutances and the architectural evolution of the region.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its precise address and protected status. The GPS location and administrative data, such as the Insee code of the municipality (50147), allow the precise location of this monument in the historical landscape of the Channel. The turret remains a well-preserved example of Renaissance civil architecture in Lower Normandy.
