Origin and history

The Verger-Tarin Museum has its origins in the private collection of a bourgeois family from Autun, which was reunited mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries. This set of household furniture and objects, enriched by subsequent acquisitions, reflects the way of life of the petty provincial bourgeoisie of the time. The transmission of this heritage took place in two stages: first ceded to the Educational Society of Arts, Science and Arts in 1933, then offered to the city of Autun in 1954.

The creation of the present museum results from the merger of several local historical collections. In 1954, the municipality acquired the Hotel Lacomme, allowing to gather the two halves of the former hotel Rolin. This place now houses a composite ensemble: the Verger-Tarin objects, the collections of the Rolin museum, those of the former municipal museum, as well as the pieces from the Lapidaire and Verger-Tarin museums. This concentration offers a varied panorama, combining archaeology, ethnology and social history.

Ranked as Musée de France and labeled for its ambiance character, the museum stands out for its location in the historic centre of Autun, rue des Sous-Chambres. Its approximate address (7 Rue des Marbres) and its cartographic accuracy deemed fair (note 5/10) highlight the challenges of precise location for this heritage site. The establishment remains a tangible witness to the domestic and cultural practices of Burgundy in the nineteenth century, while integrating older archaeological elements.
