Origin and history
The viaduct de la Borrèze is a major railway work on the Aubrais-Orléans line in Montauban, located in the Lot en Occitanie. Built in the 4th quarter of the 19th century, it crosses the Borrèze valley with 30 arches of 15 meters range, reaching 32 meters height. This laying bridge, 571 meters long, was designed to support two railway tracks, integrating from its origin a section of the line from Souillac to Viescamp-sous-Jallès.
The viaduct was commissioned in 1885 and electrified in 1942. It marks a strategic point at PK 536,500 of the line, between the stations of Gignac-Cressensac and Souillac. Its functional architecture reflects the railway construction techniques of the time, combining robustness and structural elegance.
Ranked a historical monument by decree of 28 December 1984, the viaduct illustrates the importance of French industrial heritage. Its protection recognizes its technical and historical value, while stressing its role in the development of the regional rail network. Today, there remains a tangible testimony of 19th century engineering, still in service under the management of the SNCF.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as public property and its openness to rail traffic. Although not accessible to the public for tourist visits, it is an emblematic visual landmark of the Borrèze valley, visible from the nearby departmental road.
