Origin and history

The viaduct de la Bouble is a railway structure located on horseback in the communes of Échassesssières and Louroux-de-Bouble, in the department of l'Allier (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built between 1868 and 1871, it allows the Commentry-Gannat railway line to cross the Bouble valley, a tributary of the Sioule. The building combines a wire mesh structure for the main viaduct (300 m, 6 spans of 50 m) and a 17 arch masonry access bridge. Its total height is 62 m above the bottom of the valley.

The Commentry-Gannat line, created in 1861 to support the industrial development of the region under the Second Empire, required the construction of four viaducts to cross the river valleys. The viaduct of the Bouble, designed by engineer Wilhelm Nördling, is distinguished by its cast iron batteries reinforced by straight crossbows and curved legs. Technical challenges delayed its completion until 1871. It was listed at the Historic Monuments in December 2009, alongside the viaduct of the Belon, thus completing the protection of the four iconic viaducts of the line.

The work illustrates 19th century technical innovation in the field of railway bridges, combining metal and masonry. Its mesh structure, typical of the time, reflects the advances of French industrial engineering. The viaduct remains today a major testimony of the Allier railway heritage, associated with the economic expansion of the region under the Second Empire. The masonry arches and cast iron batteries, designed by Felix Moreaux and Wilhelm Nördling, highlight the collaboration between engineers to overcome topographic constraints.

The viaduct of the Bouble is managed by a public institution of the State. Its listing as Historic Monuments, together with other works on the line, highlights the heritage importance of this railway network. Available sources, including the Merimée and Structurae bases, as well as the works of Marcel Prade (Ponts and viaducts in the 19th century), document his role in the history of transport and industrial architecture in Auvergne.
