Origin and history

The Châteaulet de Villarnoux is a monument located in Bussières, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 16th century, it embodies the defensive architecture of this period, although its origins date back to earlier conflicts, particularly those related to the war between Louis XI and Charles the Temerary.

In 1478 Charles I of Amboise, acting on the order of King Louis XI, destroyed several castles of lords allied to Mary of Burgundy, including the castle of Villarnoux and the castle of Ruère. This episode is part of the repression of the Burgundy supporters after the death of Charles the Temerary, marking a period of political and territorial recomposition in Burgundy.

The building, now partially preserved, was listed as historic monuments in 1967. This protection reflects its heritage significance, although available sources do not detail its architectural evolution or subsequent uses. Its inscription in the Mérimée base makes it a subject of study for the history of Burgundian military architecture.
