Origin and history

The castle of Virieu found its origins in the 11th century as a castral wooden motte erected by Wilfrid de Virieu. Turned into a stone castle in the 12th century, it became the capital of the Mansion of Virieu in 1107, during the division of the county of Sermorens. This strategic site, dominating the Virieu Valley, evolves over the centuries under the influence of successive noble families.

Acquired in 1220 by the house of Clermont via a wedding, the castle remains in this line for seven generations. In 1573, Antoine de Clermont sold it to Artus Prunier de Saint-André, first president of the Parliament of Grenoble. The latter undertakes major enlargements, however preserving the architectural harmony together. The castle even welcomed Louis XIII in 1622, which left cannons still visible today.

In the 17th century, the castle underwent notable transformations, including the addition of a chapel completed in 1681, decorated with a credence carved by Stéphanie de Virieu. The commons and stables also date from this period. In 1874, the Count of Saint-Ferriol, the last descendant of the Prunier, gave the estate to Alphonse de Virieu, heir to an ancient branch of the owners. Between 1924 and 1928, an ambitious restoration was carried out by Henri Marquis de Virieu, requiring the sale of the Brangues castle to Paul Claudel.

Ranked a Historic Monument in stages (1965, 1990, then in total in 2023), the castle combines medieval defensive elements (tourelles, mâchicoulis courtine) and Renaissance/Classic (gardens on terraces, parterres à la française). Its forecourt, bordered by 17th century communes, leads to a paved inner courtyard, framed by buildings in irregular quadrilateral. Two pepper towers flank the west façade, while a double-flyed staircase serves the restored gardens according to their original plans.

Inside, the King's bedroom, with its red damask baldaquin bed, and the white room, furnished with 17th century marquetries, bear witness to the aristocratic fascist. The historic kitchen retains a monumental fireplace and tapestries of Aubusson. The dovecote, the retaining walls and the remains of the park complete this ensemble, now open to the public from Easter to Toussaint, with sometimes theatrical visits.

The castle of Virieu thus illustrates almost a thousand years of history, from its feudal foundation to its modern restorations, through its role as seigneurial residence and then as a cultural place. Its hybrid architecture, combining defence and aesthetics, makes it a remarkable example of the Dauphin heritage, anchored in the landscape of the Virieu Valley.
