Origin and history

Pierrefort Castle is a medieval castle built in 1306 in Martincourt, in the Esch Valley, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. It replaces an older building, mentioned as "all ruyné and demoly" in a 16th century work. This new castle was commissioned by Pierre de Bar, the youngest son of Count Thiébaut II of Bar, who laid the foundations of it after receiving the lands of Martincourt and Mamey in 1300.

The fortress is mentioned for the first time in Pierre de Bar's cover letters in 1306, where it evokes "the chastel that I make desour Martincourt and the fortress and appendises them all entirely dou dit chastel". The monument, typical of medieval military architecture, was classified as historical monuments in 1862, highlighting its heritage importance.

According to historical descriptions, the castle of Pierrefort presented niches equipped with huts, an architectural detail characteristic of the fortifications of the time. Its strategic location in the Esch Valley reflects its defensive and symbolic role in the region, then under the influence of the Counts of Bar.
