Origin and history
The castle of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe is an emblematic monument of the former province of Maine, now part of the Sarthe department in the Pays de la Loire region. Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, it bears witness to the medieval architecture of this period, although only remains remain today. Located on the left bank of the Sarthe, west of the village, it occupies a strategic position, probably linked to the defence or control of the local territory.
The remains of the castle were inscribed under the title of Historic Monuments by order of 9 December 1926, thus recognizing their heritage value. Today owned by the commune of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, the site is located near address 101 Victor Hugo Avenue, although its geographical accuracy is estimated to be poor (level 5/10). No information is available on its current accessibility, whether it be visits, rentals or accommodation.
At the time of its construction, the 14th and 15th centuries were marked, in Maine as elsewhere, by tensions linked to the Hundred Years' War and feudal conflicts. Castles in this region often played a key role in protecting people and communication routes, such as the Sarthe River. Their architecture reflected the defensive needs while symbolizing the power of the local lords, although the sources do not specify the identity of the original builders or owners of Fresnay.
