Origin and history
The Moulin des Gués, located in Fontaine-Couture in the department of Mayenne, is a windmill built in 1824. It is the only windmill still operating in this department of Pays de la Loire. This iconic monument was enhanced from one floor in 1870 and equipped with the Berton system, a technical innovation for the time.
In 1884, the mill was acquired by the Lemoine family, who still own it today. After a period of abandonment from 1954, it was restored in 1993 by Louis Lemoine, allowing the production of black wheat flour. This restoration restored this industrial and artisanal heritage.
The mill is registered as a historical monument by order of 26 June 1989, thus recognizing its heritage value. However, an incident occurs on August 24, 2013, when a wing breaks, putting a temporary stop to production. Since then, restoration works are under way to preserve this witness of the milling heritage of the nineteenth century.
