Origin and history
Château Bouvet-Ladubay is an iconic building located in Saumur, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in the 4th quarter of the 19th century, more precisely in 1878, it embodies the eclectic architecture of its time, blending influences and styles to reflect the prestige of its sponsor. This "château" was conceived as a home of ostentation, intended to affirm the social and economic status of its owner, the industrialist Etienne Bouvet, a local figure linked to the production of sparkling wines.
The building is the work of architect Piette, a pupil of Joly-Letertre, whose work illustrates the aesthetic and technical ambitions of the industrial bourgeoisie of the time. The castle is part of a larger complex, including protected elements such as a winter garden, a greenhouse, an aviary, a Bollée wind turbine, as well as dolmens and menhirs, reflecting a taste for exoticism and innovation. These developments underline the desire to create a productive, decorative and symbolic domain, typical of 19th century employers' residences.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 26 December 1997, Château Bouvet-Ladubay today bears witness to Saumur's industrial and architectural heritage. Its registration covers not only the main building, but also ancillary factories (utility or decorative buildings), which participate in the heritage value of the site. The ensemble offers a remarkable example of the integration between bourgeois habitat, economic activity and landscape, characteristic of the region at this time.
