Origin and history

The Château de Dampierre, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is an emblematic building built mainly in the third quarter of the seventeenth century, according to the plans of the famous architect François Mansart. It is distinguished by its 15th century porch with four round towers, vestige of an old defensive system including a drawbridge, and by a 40-metre long house body, decorated with fronted windows and a mansard roof decorated with flame vases. The estate, classified as a Historic Monument in 1929, also includes a châtelet, a water mirror and a terrace connecting the park elements.

The seigneury of Dampierre has traversed the centuries into the hands of noble families: first the Dampierre, Châtillon-Dampierre, then the Lannoy by descent. In 1526, the estate passed to the Picot de Dampierre (erected in marquisat in 1645), before being transmitted by marriage to the La Rochefoucauld of Estissac in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the castle changed owners several times: acquired in 1907 by the Viscount Jean Beuret (who carried out important restoration work there), it was sold in the 1930s to the Picot de Moras d'Aligny, which kept it until 2021. A last transfer of ownership took place in 2022.

The castle illustrates the architectural evolution of aristocratic residences, mixing medieval heritage (the 15th century porch) and French classicism (the 17th century structure). Its park, with its water mirror and well falling into the Dawn, reflects the landscape importance of seigneurial estates. The elements protected by the 1929 classification include the facades, the frame, the honorary staircase, the vaulted kitchen, as well as the chestnut and its entrance gate, reflecting the heritage richness of the site.
