Origin and history

The Vichy Palace of Congress and Opera, located in the Allier, is a unique architectural ensemble composed of an opera and an old large casino. The first casino, built in 1864-1865 at the request of Napoleon III by architect Charles Badger, was decorated by Carrier-Belleuse (sculptures) and Jules Petit (paintings). Inaugurated in 1865, it was extended at the beginning of the 20th century to include an Art Nouveau style opera, inaugurated in 1903 after works led by Charles Le Coeur and Lucien Woog.

The opera, decorated with gilding, ivory and floral motifs, is the only room of this style in France, with a capacity of 1,482 places. Its decoration includes works by Léon Rudnicki (paintings) and Émile Robert (ferroneries). The building was partially destroyed by fire in 1986, then restored in 1995 to add a modern congress hall, while retaining historical elements classified as Historic Monuments since 1991 and 1996.

The site played a major political role in July 1940, when the opera hall hosted the vote of full powers to Marshal Pétain, marking the beginning of the Vichy regime. After a decline due to the decline in thermalism, opera regained its vitality thanks to varied annual programming (opéra, dance, concerts) and events such as the European Lyric Meetings since 2004. A dedicated museum, created in 2002, preserves its archives and costumes.

The ensemble, located between the thermal district and the city centre, marks the southern end of the Parc des Sources. It now houses multi-purpose rooms (Eugenie Auditorium, Berlioz Salon) and hosts festivals such as the Games since 2018. The opera remains an active cultural place, with enhanced mediation for school audiences and guided tours organized since 2005.

Architecturally, the Grand Casino and opera form a coherent whole, with eclectic influences (Egyptian masks, Mesopotamian patterns) and a unique chromatic harmony. The sculptures of Pierre Seguin, such as the caryatides of the Four Seasons, and the glass windows of Francis Chigot enrich this building, classified for its facades, its theater, and its walk-in.

The management of the site was marked by figures such as Diane Polya-Zeitline (director from 1990 to 2017) and Martin Kubich (since 2017), who diversified its programming. The Opera Museum, supported by the Péronnet Foundation, is the only one in France outside Île-de-France to preserve historical sets and scores, attracting researchers and students.
