Origin and history

Sainte-Marie de Souillac Abbey, founded by Benedictines in the 12th century, replaces a community attributed to Saint Eloi. The monks turned a swamp into a prosperous estate, but the abbey suffered destruction during the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. In 1573, the claustral buildings were set on fire and rebuilt between 1659 and 1712 under the impetus of Abbé Henri de La Mothe-Houdancourt, attached to the Saint-Maur congregation.

During the Revolution, the abbey was sold as a national good and became a college and then a tobacco store in 1836. The abbey, listed as a historical monument in 1841, was restored several times (1839-1848, 1881-1895, 1933-1936) to its Romanesque appearance. Today, it serves as a parish church, replacing the destroyed church of Saint Martin.

The architecture of the church, inspired by the Byzantine style, is distinguished by its cupolas on pendants and its bedside with pentagonal apsidioles. Inside, carved reliefs, such as the 'pillar of Suillac' and the figure of the prophet Isaiah, come from an unfinished project of great porch. These works, comparable to those of Moissac, probably date back to the years 1140-1170.

The furniture includes major paintings such as Le Christ au Jardin des Oliviers (1844) by Théodore Chassériau, and an organ by Jean-Baptiste Stoltz (1850), classified as a historical monument. The instrument, restored in 1988 and 2017, is at the heart of a summer cultural program, L'Heure d'Orgue, organized since 2003.

The construction campaigns, carried out from east to west, reveal distinct phases: the bedside (circa 1150), the nave, and the oldest western porch tower. The restorations of the 19th and 20th centuries, sometimes criticized, made it possible to clear the domes and restore the building to its stylistic unit.

The Abbey, symbol of Quercy's Romanesque heritage, illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of the 12th century. Its history also reflects political and religious upheavals, from medieval wars to the Revolution, to Maurist reconstructions and modern restorations.
