Origin and history

The Café de La Loge is an emblematic café-restaurant located in the heart of Salses-le-Château, in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Built in the last quarter of the 19th century, it embodies the functional aesthetics of the urban buildings of that period, with a sober, coated facade and low arched bays framed with wooden mouldings. Its interior, on the other hand, contrasts with its decorative eclecticism: walls adorned with panels and glass mixing putti Renaissance, arabesques Regence and trophies Louis XVI, while the cariatides and mouldings of the ceiling inspire the Great Century.

Ranked a Historic Monument since 23 May 2014 at the initiative of the owners Jean-Louis Perrié and Christine Escaré, the café has benefited from a complete restoration (façades, roof, cellar, floors) from 2000. This work allowed us to recreate a frontage faithful to the spirit of the 19th century, with the support of the DRAC of Montpellier, and to develop an exhibition room on the floor. The place, still active, offers traditional Catalan cuisine and actively participates in European Heritage Days.

The establishment, located at n°38 Xavier Avenue LLoberes, near the Saint-Étienne church, illustrates the social role of cafés-restaurants as places of conviviality and local heritage. Its protection covers the facades, the roof and the ground floor with its decor, thus preserving a rare testimony of 19th century architectural eclecticism in the region. The current owners, who fell under the charm of the place, worked for its valorization, also obtaining the Tourism Medal in 2006.
