Origin and history

The Maison Champy, created in 1720 by Edme Champy, a cooper, is the oldest trading house in Burgundy still in operation. Located in Beaune, it played a pioneering role in the Burgundy wine trade, becoming the first "breeder trader" in the region. Its activity was gradually extended to wine production with the acquisition of vine plots.

In the 19th century, Maison Champy collaborated with Louis Pasteur, who conducted research on the pasteurization of wines in his cellars. The remains of these experiments, including a pasteurizer, are still preserved in buildings built in 1890. These facilities, which were listed as historic monuments in 2010, also house a museum featuring traditional tools such as sabotières, used to concentrate wine in the cold.

Purchased several times, notably by the Maison Louis Jadot in 1990, then by the Meurgey family, Maison Champy underwent a major restructuring in 2013 under the direction of Dimitri Bazas, his oenologist since 1999. The estate, which combines organic viticulture (certified in 2010) and trading, now produces wines from plots located on prestigious appellations such as Volnay, Pommard or Corton. Its activity also extends to wines bought in grapes or musts, covering appellations of the Côte de Nuits and Mâconnais.

In 2010, the inclusion of its buildings in historical monuments marked the recognition of its architectural and technical heritage. In the same year, the purchase of the Laleur-Piot house led to the expansion of its offer with great wines such as the Corton-Charlemagne. In 2016, the Champy House was integrated into the Advini Group, while maintaining its historical identity and its anchor in Beaune.

The estate, which owns 29 hectares, markets its wines mainly for export (67%), particularly in the United States and Japan. Its reputation is based on centuries-old know-how, combining tradition and innovation, as evidenced by its traditional methods of vinification (natural breeding, preferential maceration) and its conversion to biodynamics on certain plots.
