Origin and history
The castle of Angais, located in the commune of the same name in New Aquitaine, was erected between 1907 and 1908 by architects Pierre Gabarret and Jules-Antoine Notary. This monument illustrates a pivotal period of Bearnaise architecture, combining local influences and early 20th century styles. Its stables are directly inspired by regional vernacular architecture, while the park, designed by landscape architect Decorges, completes the ensemble with an aesthetic and functional approach.
Ranked Historic Monument since June 30, 2000, the castle includes in its legal protection the main building (cadastre B 19), stables (B 1295) and park (B 20 to 22, 1298). The location of the site, although documented (1 Rue du Lac, Angaïs), remains approximate according to available sources, with cartographic accuracy considered fair (note 5/10). No information is provided on its current accessibility (visits, events, accommodation).
The castle embodies the architectural renewal of the Béarnais bourgeoisie at the turn of the century, a period marked by an interest in local traditions reinterpreted through modern techniques. The architects Gabarret and Noutary, as well as the landscape designer Decorges, have helped create a coherent set, reflecting both the social prestige of its sponsors and the attachment to a distinctive regional heritage.
