Origin and history

Moncley Castle, built between 1778 and 1790 by the architect Claude Joseph Alexandre Bertrand (student of Ledoux), is a neoclassical masterpiece commissioned by Marquis François Terrier de Santans, the first president of Besançon's parliament. It replaces an ancient feudal fortress and has remained in the same family since its construction. Its style, marked by columns evoking a Greek temple and a central rotunda, illustrates the ancient influence popular at the time.

The castle houses an exceptional collection of wallpaper (1785-1787), original furniture and paintings, as well as a vaulted kitchen in the communes. The estate, organized in U around a court of honor, includes an orchard garden, stables, and a ride. Its park, avenues and medieval remains have been protected since 2005, completing a first classification in 1944.

Ranked as a historic monument for its architecture and interior decorations (vestibulum in Italian, salons Louis XVI), the castle is open to the public from May to October. It bears witness to the bisontin aristocratic fascist before the Revolution, while integrating utilitarian elements such as a farm and agricultural dependencies. Its partly classified furniture reinforces its heritage value.

The property extends over Moncley and Émagny, 15 km from Besançon. The Marquis Terrier de Santans, also owner of the Hotel Terrier de Santans in Besançon, left a lasting impression. The castle embodies the alliance between neoclassical architectural innovation and the franc-comtoise seigneurial tradition, while preserving traces of its medieval past.
