Origin and history
Pondres Castle, located in the town of Villevieille near Sommières (Gard), dominates the road d'Ales in a wooded park setting. Its history begins in the 12th century with the construction of a medieval dungeon, profoundly transformed in the early 17th century by the addition of two wings and a central body. These architectural changes reflect the evolution of residential tastes and needs between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
Owned by the Gard General Council between 2004 and 2006, the estate is quickly transferred to an individual for its historical part, while an adjacent parcel, on the other side of the road, is allocated to a supermarket and houses. The rest of the estate retains a vineyard vocation, a legacy of local agricultural activities. The castle, classified as a historical monument since 1990, also includes a 17th century pigeon house protected from 1964.
Today, the castle houses a 4-star hotel and a Michelin-starred restaurant (La Canopée), combining heritage and modernity. Its architecture combines medieval defensive elements (donjon) and classical openings (terraces, stairs), with interiors organized around galleries and apartments. Considered the largest castle in the Gard, it illustrates the adaptation of historic buildings to contemporary uses.
