Origin and history

Le Cellier aux Moines is a medieval building located in Givry, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Built in the 12th century, this cellar is directly attached to a windmill, forming a remarkable architectural ensemble. Its inscription as historic monuments, effective since 15 April 1970, protects its facades, roofs and the mill itself, testifying to its heritage importance.

The cellar and mill illustrate the economic and agricultural activities of the region in the Middle Ages. At that time, the cellars were mainly used for the storage of crops and foodstuffs, while the windmills were used for the processing of cereals into flour. These infrastructures were essential for the daily life of rural communities, reflecting a social organization focused on agriculture and crafts.

The protected elements of the Cellier aux Moines include all the facades and roofs of the buildings, as well as the windmill, as specified in the 1970 registration order. This classification highlights the historical and architectural value of the site, while allowing its preservation for future generations. Today, the monument remains a tangible testimony of the Burgundian medieval heritage, accessible to the visit and integrated into the local landscape.
