Origin and history
Bosredon Castle, located in Volvic in Puy-de-Dôme, is a typical example of 18th-century Auvergne residences, influenced by Italian style. Its architectural features include large windows, grey stone links and bands contrasting with white coatings, as well as a roof balustrade, outdoor stairs and a terrace. This type of construction reflects the taste of the aristocracy or the affluent bourgeoisie of the period for both elegant and functional residences, often incorporating French-style gardens.
The castle retains a remarkable medieval element: a carved Gothic tympanum, dating from the 14th or 15th centuries, adorned with an armored shield. This vestige bears witness to an older, probably feudal, origin before the major transformations of the eighteenth century. The estate, registered as a historical monument in 2010, protects not only the building but also its orangery, gardens with terraces, ponds and mythological statues, as well as its fence and gate.
Since 1988, the castle houses the Sahut Museum, also known as the Marcel-Sahut Museum, which enriches its cultural role in the municipality. The property, today communal, illustrates the architectural and social evolution of the region, mixing medieval heritage and classical influences. Its official inscription in 2010 highlights its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its garden, representative of the 18th century aesthetic codes in Auvergne.
The location of the castle, in the heart of Volvic, a town renowned for its volcanic stone, adds a material dimension to its history. Local materials, such as grey stone, were probably used for its construction, strengthening its anchor in the auvergnat landscape. The site, open to the public, allows you to discover both the architectural history of the region and the collections of the Sahut Museum, dedicated to art and local history.
