Origin and history

The Château de Coupiac, located in the eponymous village of Aveyron (Occitanie), is an emblematic building built mainly in the 13th century, and then rebuilt in the 15th century. Its architecture is distinguished by two gallows wings resting on the rock, flanked by three circular towers with slightly different styles, reflecting a construction spread over time. In a flamboyant Gothic style, it impresses with its dimensions, its mâchicoulis, its murderers, and its sling windows, while integrating defensive elements such as latrines and a gallery that is now gone.

Between the 10th and 13th centuries, the castle was a copossession of the Counts and Bishops of Rodez, with a first mention of a building in the 9th century according to the Baron of Gaujal historian. In 1238 he moved to the family of Panat, marking the beginning of a long series of owners. In the 18th century, Izarn de Méjanel, governor of Saint-Sernin, acquired in 1778 and undertook major transformations: suppression of the round road, the mâchicoulis and the gallery, enlargement of the windows, and addition of a classical facade. The castle, spared during the Revolution (only its coats of arms were hammered), then became an ecclesiastical good before being bought by the commune in 1981.

Since 1982, the castle has been managed by the association "Los Amics del Castel de Copiac", dedicated to its restoration and animation. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1928, it now offers exhibitions on medieval life (calligraphy, costumes, cooking) and summer entertainment for the public. Its history reflects the architectural and social changes of Rouergue, from feudal conflicts to its present role as a cultural and educational place.
