Origin and history

The château de Goulaine, located in Haute-Goulaine in Loire-Atlantique (Pays de la Loire), is a 16th and 17th century building listed as a historical monument since 1913. Built of tuffeau stone, it blends medieval remains with Renaissance architecture, and was once a fortress protecting the border between the Duchy of Brittany and the Kingdom of France. Surrounded by Natura 2000 marshes, it still embodies today the heritage of the Goulaine family, present on the site since the 12th century.

In the 12th century, Jean de Goulaine, captain of Nantes, strengthened the estate to guard against Norman attacks. The family, quoted from the 7th Crusade (1248), played an active role in the religious wars alongside the Catholic League. In 1621 Gabriel de Goulaine obtained the erection of his seigneury in Marquisate by Louis XIII. The castle, however, changed hands between 1666 and 1858, passing to the families of Rosmadec and Baillehache, before being sold in 1786 to the Dutch shipowner Piter Deurbroucq, saving him from destruction during the Revolution.

The estate was bought in 1858 by a younger branch of the Goulaine, which kept it until its recent sale to a Parisian industrialist. The castle, open to the public, houses an old butterfly plantation (1983-2016), a museum dedicated to the LU brand (1999-2019), and one of the oldest vineyards in France, still in operation. Its architecture preserves 16th-century fireplaces and 17th-century decorations, while its courtyard is girdled with a dungeon enclosure.

The legend attributes the castle the invention of white butter around 1890 by its cook Clémence Lefeuvre. Thirty generations of Goulaine's family are succeeded, marking its history with alliances, strategic sales and resilience to political upheavals. Today, the site combines architectural heritage, historical viticulture and industrial memory, while remaining a symbol of the Breton and Ligerian nobility.

The château de Goulaine is also known for its wine, produced for centuries, making its estate one of the oldest wineries in Europe still in operation. The property also housed an artistic collection of the LU brand, exhibited from 1999 to 2019 in its stables, before its withdrawal by the group Mondelez. These elements illustrate the diversity of its heritage, between aristocratic tradition, gastronomic innovation and industrial heritage.
