Origin and history
Moléans Castle is the result of several construction campaigns. In the sixteenth century, the commons and east wing were erected with its southern pavilion, reflecting Renaissance architecture. These elements, still visible today, mark the first major phase of the building. The interior distribution and facades were thoroughly remodelled from 1754, including the removal of a stair tower to enlarge the courtyard.
In the 19th century, the northern facade of the north wing was modified in a neo-classical style, illustrating the evolution of architectural tastes. The castle preserves remarkable elements such as a rock panelled living room and a panoramic wallpaper of 1851. The terrace overlooking the Conie River could house remains of the earlier medieval castle, although not confirmed by excavations.
The legal protections distinguish the classified and registered parts: facades and roofs (excluding 19th century additions), the dovecote, as well as interiors such as the library and its wallpaper. These measures, taken in 1991 and 1994, highlight the heritage value of the site. Private property, the castle now combines historical heritage and contemporary uses (rents, visits).
