Origin and history

The castle of Peychaud, located in Ambarès-et-Lagrave en Gironde, is a 17th and 19th century monument, marked by symmetrical architecture and Dutch influences. The main house, flanked by square pavilions and round turrets added later, is part of a park traversed by drainage canals dug by Dutch specialists in the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. These hydrological developments were designed to clean up the surrounding marshes, reflecting the agricultural and technical concerns of the time.

Originally, the castle belonged to the Fayet family, local lords since the 16th century. The house corps, originally built around 1680, was a low building with two pyramidal pavilions. The current wings of the entrance façade and round turrets were added later, probably in the 18th century. After the Revolution, the estate, then abandoned, was thoroughly redesigned in 1871 for Admiral Charles-Marie Dompierre d'Hormoy, Minister of the Navy, as evidenced by a commemorative plaque. The amendments include the addition of pavilions on the ground floor, a remodeling of roofs and decor, as well as the reconstruction of agricultural parts at a distance from the house.

The facades and roofs of the castle, characteristic of classical and eclectic styles, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1966. The estate also preserves traces of its agricultural past, with buildings in rubble and two windmills today in poor condition. These elements illustrate the evolution of the site, from a rural seigneury to an aristocratic residence, then to a protected heritage, witness to the social and architectural transformations of the Gironde.
