Origin and history
The castle of Saint-Clar-de-Rivière, built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, is more like an imposing mansion than a fortified castle. Its architecture, sober and classic, reflects the cannons of the Enlightenment century: a rectangular plane flanked by four towered corners, a symmetrical main façade decorated with brick mouldings, and a triangular pediment pierced with an oculus. The originality of the building lies in the semicircular pediments surrounding the towers, also pierced by three sides. Inside, the layout of the front façades and the rear service spaces, separated by a corridor, illustrates the evolution of domestic lifestyles in the 18th century, marking a clear distinction between noble spaces and utility areas.
In the 19th century, the house was enlarged, while the commons and stables were rebuilt around 1900 in the two side courts. These outbuildings, as well as the enclosure wall and entrance gate adorned with grids, are now part of the elements protected under the Historic Monuments. The castle, inscribed in 1991 and 1999, thus preserves the traces of its transformations, mixing heritage of the Enlightenment and subsequent adaptations. Its state of conservation and location, considered very satisfactory (note 8/10), make it a remarkable architectural testimony of the Haute-Garonne.
Ranked as a Historic Monument, the castle embodies the passage from defensive architecture to a recreational residence, typical of the aristocracy or the Earth bourgeoisie of the South-West. The legal protections relate specifically to facades, roofs, gate and gate, as well as to outbuildings (stables and related buildings), highlighting the heritage value of the ensemble. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rental, accommodation), its plan and interior decorations suggest a residential and representative vocation, characteristic of the well-off rural homes of the Old Regime and the 19th century.
