The isolated pigeon-house (Case C 12): inscription by order of 20 December 1973
Origin and history
The castle of Salleneuve, located in Mont-d'Astarac in Gers, dates from the second quarter of the eighteenth century. Although the architectural details of the castle itself are not specified in the available sources, it is associated with an isolated dovecote built around 1742. This dovecote, of square plane, rests on four pillars enlarged at the base and surmounted by a traditional larmier. Its floor, almost completely closed, has only a small bay to the south, while its half-timber is filled with full bricks. Originally, it was probably covered with flat crochet tiles, and its doves are on the east and south sides.
The dovecote of the castle of Salleneuve was inscribed as a Historical Monument by decree of 20 December 1973, under the reference cadastral C 12. This type of construction reflects the economic and symbolic importance of dovecotes in rural areas of the Old Regime, often reserved for lords or landowners. The location of the site, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 8/10), places the monument at the approximate address of 5043 Salleneuve, in the commune of Mont-d'Astarac, whose Insee code is 32280.
Available sources, including Monumentum and the internal data of the Merimée database, do not provide information on the opening of the castle or dovecote on the visit, or on any services such as guest rooms or room rentals. The monument remains mainly documented for its architecture and heritage inscription, without further details on its contemporary use or its specific history beyond the period of construction mentioned.
