Origin and history

The Confectionery Au Negus, located in Nevers, is an iconic historic monument of the 19th century. Its architecture reflects an eclectic and exotic style, close to neo-Moorish architecture, part of the orientalist and historicist current. This place is particularly remarkable for its decoration and furniture, which make it a unique architectural testimony of this time.

Until 1891, the establishment was named Maison Edmond Randier, by the name of its founder, professional pastry maker. He was later renamed Maison Randier-Grelier successor, then Former Grelier-Lyron successors. In 1931, the creation of a limited liability company between Henri Lyron and his son Charles gave rise to the name Lyron et Cie, owner of the sign Au Negus. This name is inseparable from its flagship product, the Negus candy, created at the end of 1900.

Bonbon Negus was baptized in honour of the Emperor of Abyssinia Menelik II (1844-1913), then Negus of Shewa. The latter was crowned Negest (King of Kings) of Ethiopia on November 3, 1889. This candy was created on the occasion of his official visit to France during the Universal Exhibition of 1900, marking a link between confectionery and an international historic event.

Confectionery has been partially classified as a historic monument since February 16, 2015. The protected elements include the entire foreroom, its decors and carrying structures, as well as the mosaic threshold of the doorstep on the street. These mosaics are attributed to the renowned artist Pietro Favret. The official address of this monument is the 96 rue François-Mitterrand in Nevers, in the Nièvre department.
