Origin and history

Lefèvre-Denise confectionery, ancestor of Lefèvre-Lemoine, was founded in 1840 in Nancy by Antoine-Louis Lefèvre, specializing in gingerbread, biscuits and confectionery. Originally set up on Rue de la Faïencerie, she moved in 1846 on Rue Saint-Dizier, adopting the Ensign Au Grand Saint Nicolas, in tribute to the patron saint of the confectioners. Antoine's brother, Jean-Romain, also founded the LU biscuit shop in Nantes in 1846, taking back Lorraine recipes.

Starting in 1870, the company experienced a marked boom, with the opening of a factory in Laxou around 1890 and a second store on Rue Saint-Jean. In 1909, she was awarded the International Exhibition of the East for her macaroons and bergamots. The Bergamottes brand of Nancy (with two t) was registered in 1898 by Louis Lefèvre-Denise, son of Antoine, consolidating his reputation.

In 1925, a family split gave birth to Lefèvre Georges, directed by Georges Lefèvre, who opened shops such as Au Duché de Lorraine (1925) with mahogany furniture classified since 2022. In 1952, Georges bought the original company, bringing together the brands under Lefèvre-Lemoine. Today, led by the 6th generation, confectionery continues its specialities in its historic shop on 47 rue Henri Poincaré, partially classified at the Historic Monuments in 2024.

Nancy's bergamots and macaroons, emblems of the house, are cited in cultural works such as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001). In 2021, Monique Lefèvre-Lemoine was decorated for 60 years in direction, and Laxou's workshop (ovens, marbles) was protected in 2024. The company also collaborates with local artisans, such as CERFAV, for glass paste creations.

The material heritage of the confectionery includes fronts, panelling and furniture of the shops Au Duché de Lorraine and To Marie Leczinska (former Schwenninger pastry), registered in 2022 and 2024. These elements, as well as family archives, bear witness to 180 years of nean artisanal history, linked to figures such as Émile Gallé or Victor Prouvé, whose portrait by Antoine Lefèvre is preserved at the Lorrain Museum.
