Origin and history
The church Saint-Sauveur-et-Saint-Sixte de Crestet, located in the Vaucluse, has its origins in the 9th century, with a construction started in 890. This Romanesque building, backed by a cliff whose rock forms part of its north wall, is distinguished by its flat apse and its 18-metre porch. Its architecture reflects medieval techniques, while integrating remarkable natural elements as structural support.
Over the centuries, the church was enriched with three side chapels, added in 1380, 1495 and 1563 respectively, reflecting its architectural and liturgical evolution. It was only in 1760 that she definitively adopted the term Saint-Sauveur, supplementing her original name. Its inscription in historical monuments in 1988 devotes its heritage value, both for its history and for its unique landscape integration.
The site, a communal property, also illustrates the religious and social life of the region. Its imposing porch and location on a rocky spur make it a major visual and spiritual landmark for Crestet. The successive enlargements reflect the growing needs of an expanding community, while preserving the traces of its Carolingian foundation.
