Origin and history

The Hermitage Saint-Eugène de Chassagnes, located in the wood of Païolive near the Assions (Ardèche), was founded in 1652 by J. d This isolated site, dedicated to eremitic life, houses religious until the 18th century, with Hilarion as the last known hermit. After centuries of abandonment, the monument, in ruins, was bought in 1956 by Felix Darsy, Dominican and archaeologist, who partially restored it before its condition deteriorated again.

In 1979, the hermitage was listed as historical monuments for its facades and roofs. His renaissance began in 1994 with the arrival of Jean-François Holthof, a Cistercian monk, who rehabilitated him with the help of volunteers. The chapels are decorated with frescoes by Russian Orthodox monks, and the place becomes again an active spiritual center, welcoming daily Masses, celebrations (like the Transfiguration on August 6) and ecumenical meetings in August. An in-depth study of its history and Paiolive wood was published in 2003.

The Hermitage illustrates the persistence of the eremitic traditions in Ardèche, mixing religious heritage, sacred art and interfaith dialogue. Its isolation in the forest, close to the Vans, makes it a preserved place of recollection, while attracting faithful and visitors at specific events. The sources, including Le Monde (2020) and the departmental archives, underline its contemporary cultural and spiritual role.
