Origin and history

The Paris-Austerlitz station, originally called the Orléans station, was built in 1840 by the architect Félix-Emmanuel Callet for the Paris-Orléans company. It marks the opening of the Paris-Juvisy line, extended towards Orléans in 1843. Its first pier, located near the wharf of Austerlitz, replaces a prison of the National Guard and is part of the 19th century railway boom.

In 1862, the station was completely rebuilt by architect Pierre-Louis Renaud and engineer Charles Sévene, with a 280-metre-long metal hall, then the second largest in France. This project led to the disappearance of adjacent streets and the creation of a Belle Époque facade. The hall, designed by Schneider and Cie, even served as a balloon workshop during the siege of Paris in 1870.

In the 20th century, the station underwent major changes: drilling by line 5 of the metro in 1906, flooding in 1910, and complete electrification in 1926. In 1939, it returned to the top of the main lines after the saturation of the station of Orsay. During World War II, it was a place of deportation during the 1941 and 1942 raids.

In the 1960s, an underground station was built for RER C, modernizing its infrastructure. The commissioning of the LGV Atlantique in 1990 reduced its main line traffic, but it remained crucial for the Intercités de nuit and the TERs towards the Centre-Val de Loire. Since 1997, its hall and facades have been classified as historical monuments.

Since 2011, the station has undergone an ambitious renovation (planned until 2025), including a monumental marquise and 20,000 m2 of shops. Future projects are planning to transfer TGVs via the LGV POCL or a South interconnection. Its capacity to expand makes it a strategic reserve for the Parisian rail network.

Culturally, the station appears in several films, such as A Long Engagement Sunday (2004) or Off Standards (2019). Close to the Jardin des Plantes and the BnF, it is part of the Paris Rive Gauche neighbourhood, in the midst of urban change.
