Origin and history
The tidal barn of La Cassagne is a historical monument whose construction is attributed locally to the Templars. This hypothesis is reinforced by its proximity to the command office of Saint-Jean de Condat. The architectural elements of the ground floor, such as the double arches and warheads, probably date from the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, revealing an archaic invoice characteristic of this period. This building would initially have served as a tithe barn, a place to collect taxes in kind for the church or religious orders.
In the 15th century, the barn underwent a major restoration, during which parts of the double arches and warheads were redone. At that time, it was also transformed to serve as stables at the nearby castle. The rectangular building includes a ground floor, a floor and a top. A large carriageway door, located to the north, provides access to a porch leading to a saddlery or grain store, as well as a stair turret. The floor, now a single room, was probably divided in two originally.
During the 15th century work, a series of four horizontal stud windows was added to the west façade. These changes reflect an adaptation of the use of the building from an agricultural and religious function to a use more linked to seigneurial life. The architectural history of this barn thus illustrates the evolution of needs and local authorities between the Middle Ages and the end of this period.
The tidal barn has been listed as a historic monument since May 14, 1980, recognizing its heritage value. Its current state and location, although documented, do not benefit from optimal geographical accuracy according to available sources. This monument remains a testimony of the links between religious orders, agriculture and seigneurial power in Dordogne.
