Origin and history

The Grangier Hotel in Cordès is an iconic mansion in Riom, built in the 18th century. Its façade on the Rue de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, rebuilt between 1750 and 1755 by Pierre Grangier, a renowned lawyer and king's secretary, reflects the influence of local judicial elites. The building incorporates older elements, such as a 16th century staircase and three bays on the ground floor, testimonies of a previous residence.

Pierre Grangier (1694–77), native of Allègre, settled in Riom where he acquired a reputation as a lawyer on the senes floor of Auvergne. In 1755 he bought the Barony of Cordès and other seigneuries for 100,000 pounds, consolidating his social status. His son, François Grangier (1722–83), perpetuates the lineage by marrying Marie Anne Duboys de Lamothe, of whom the Grangier de Cordès and Lamothe descended, linked to noble alliances until the 19th century.

The hotel is distinguished by its exceptional interior decorations: a gypsum-style lounge representing the Four Seasons (attributed to Bouchardon), a painted walled astronomy cabinet, and a gazebo accessible by a trompe-l'oeil staircase. These elements, as well as facades and roofs, have been protected since 1990 (registration) and 1996 (classification for the astronomy cabinet).

Sold in 1876 by William de Wautier, heir to the Grangier, to Firmin Salvy (a lawyer and former member of the Cantal), the hotel illustrates the social changes of the 19th century. Its architecture mixes medieval heritage (slides with screws) and 18th century innovations, such as wrought ironworks or carved arch keys of bays.

Historical sources, including the work of Bénédicte Renaud and François Werner, highlight his role in the riomois heritage. The hotel embodies the social ascent of a family of robins, their taste for science (astronomy, geography) and their integration into the provincial aristocracy through matrimonial and land strategies.
