Origin and history
The Saint-Gervais lighthouse, located in Fos-sur-Mer in the eponymous Gulf, was erected in 1978 on the tip of Saint-Gervais. It marks the culmination of the construction of lighthouses on the French metropolitan coasts, being the last built to date. During its construction, remains of an oil lamp workshop dating from the 2nd century were discovered, revealing an ancient occupation of the site. This modern, automated and unguarded lighthouse plays a key role in the navigation of industrial vessels (oil tankers, container carriers) to the port of Fos.
The structure of the lighthouse is distinguished by its functional design: an ovoid cylindrical tower in raw reinforced concrete, topped by a green tile finish. Inside, a helical staircase and elevator lead to the lantern, while the upper part houses the technical premises. Although not open to the public, the lighthouse was listed as historic monuments by order of 21 June 2012, recognizing its heritage and architectural importance. Launched in April 1980, it illustrates the evolution of maritime signalling techniques in the 20th century.
Designed by architect Emile Pamart and engineer Aguilar, the lighthouse incorporates innovative elements for the era, such as glass pavements to the south for natural lighting. The lantern platform, accessible by a metal staircase, is lined with a concrete railing. The elevator machinery, housed in a superstructure, demonstrates a rigorous technical approach. Its registration in the general inventory (notice IA13001155) and its precise location (an impasse in the Phare, Fos-sur-Mer) make it a historical and functional landmark for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
