Origin and history

The Logis de la ferme de la Cour d'Enctoyère, also known as the Mesnil-Mauger wood farm, is a building located near the Mesnil-Mauger railway station, in the commune of Mézidon Vallée d'Auge. This monument, whose main dwelling dates from 1728, is built in limestone rubble and wooden panels, with flat or slate roofs. It is representative of the Norman rural architecture of the eighteenth century, with typical elements such as half-timbers and croup roofs.

The farm was partially listed as a historic monument in 1930 for its facades and roofs, and a new protection was granted in 2024. From 1857, Cyrille Paynel installed a dairy-fromagerie, transforming barns into ripening pieces for cheese production, with a capacity of 800 to 3000 cheeses per day. The wheat business, operated successively by Ernest Paynel, Berthe Paynel and Gaston Sérey, ceased permanently in 1945.

The farm buildings, including press, dairy and refining cellars, illustrate the evolution of agricultural and craft activities in Normandy. Refining techniques, such as ypreau wood claies and inclined openings, reflect local cheesemaking expertise. The farm, now protected, bears witness to this architectural and industrial heritage, linked to the economic history of the region.

The site is located at the address 1078 route du Mesnil-Mauger, in the department of Calvados, in Lower Normandy (now Normandy). Protected elements include the 1728 pavilion and the aligned house body, located on cadastral plot 28. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be satisfactory in advance according to available sources.
