Origin and history
The mill of the Sucrerie Blanche, located in Chalon-sur-Saône in Saône-et-Loire, is an old steam mill transformed into a sugar mill during the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. The architectural complex, consisting of industrial buildings, shops and a house with a garden, has been partially preserved. Only the fence wall, some peripheral buildings and the beet shed have disappeared.
This sugar factory was the headquarters of a major company in the Burgundy sugar sector, imposing as one of the eight French sugar groups before the Second World War. Production finally ceased in 1966. Threatened by destruction in 2011, the site was protected by a listing for historical monuments on 8 October 2012.
Today, the mill belongs to a private company. Although its access to the public is not specified, its architecture and history reflect regional industrialization and the economic importance of the sugar industry in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. The site is located at 36 quay Saint-Cosme, in an area marked by river and industrial activity.
