Origin and history
The Old Bridge of Nérac, located in the Lot-et-Garonne department in New Aquitaine, is an emblematic work of the city, allowing the crossing of the Baise. Built mainly in the 16th century, it probably replaces an older medieval bridge, reflecting the strategic importance of Nerac, then capital of Albret. Its arches, including a 12.60-metre power plant, and triangular forks forming pedestrian shelters, illustrate the construction techniques of the time. The bridge is associated with Henri I of Albret, a major figure in the region, although its exact construction during its reign is not accurately dated.
Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone numerous restorations, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, due to recurrent structural disorders. In 1680, a breach made him dangerous, and in 1699 he threatened to ruin, requiring repairs to the batteries and vaults in 1705. The Baisian floods, aggravated by an insufficient outlet, caused repeated damage, as in 1768 and 1829. An arch was enlarged between 1830 and 1838 to facilitate navigation to Condom, while the doors at the ends, one of which was used as a powder shop, were demolished in the 19th century for old age.
The old bridge also had an administrative historical dimension: in 1832, the sub-prefect Haussmann had to take a detour to reach the sub-prefecture, illustrating his precarious state. Ranked historic monument on November 14, 1988, it is today a major architectural and historical testimony, property of the commune. Its technical characteristics, such as its broken arches and shelters, make it a remarkable example of the masonry bridges of the medieval and reborn period.
The sources, including Marcel Prade's work and the Mérimée and Structurae bases, underline his role in local heritage. The bridge, open to the visit, remains a symbol of Nerac's rich history, linked to the Albret dynasty and its urban development over the centuries.
