Origin and history
The drawbridge of Mennetou-sur-Cher was built between 1827 and 1834 as part of the technical development of the Berry Canal. This canal, which has now been partially filled, required adequate infrastructure to allow the crossing while integrating a landscape dimension. The bridge, originally made of wood, was replaced between 1885 and 1888, before its deck became fixed between 1955 and 1956, after the canal was downgraded in 1955.
This monument illustrates the engineering of the 19th century, designed to meet the logistical and economic needs of the time. The canal of the Berry, although abandoned, retains traces of its industrial past, including this drawbridge, classified as a Historic Monument in 2013 for its mechanism and stone terminals. These elements demonstrate the importance of inland waterways in the region's territorial and economic organisation.
The construction of the bridge is attributed to engineer Joseph-Michel Dutens, key figure of the canal works. Today owned by the municipality, the building remains an emblematic vestige of 19th century river infrastructure, despite the gradual disappearance of many other wooden drawbridges that once marked the route of the canal.
