Origin and history

The Porte des Butcheries de Billom, located in the Puy-de-Dôme, is one of the few preserved remains of the medieval enclosure that once girded the village around the church of Saint-Cerneuf. Built in the 12th century, it reflects the strategic importance of the city at that time, where ramparts were used to protect local residents and commercial activities. These gates, typical of medieval defensive architecture, marked the main entrances to the city and played a key role in regulating flows of people and goods.

In the 18th century, the interior of the Gate of the Boucheries was enriched by a stucco decor, reflecting a desire to beautify or adapt to new uses, perhaps linked to its integration into the evolving urban fabric. This mixture of styles, both medieval and classical, illustrates the transformations suffered by defensive monuments once their military role is obsolete. The door was inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of November 25, 1994, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

Today, the Porte des Boucheries is located at 8 Rue des Boucheries, in the historic centre of Billom. Although its exact location is considered "passible" (note of 5/10), it remains a major point of interest in understanding the urban history of the region. Property shared between an association and an individual, its access and current uses (visits, rentals, etc.) are not specified in available sources. Its state of conservation and its integration into the contemporary landscape question the challenges of preserving medieval heritage in urban areas.
