Origin and history
The Douvenant viaduct is a vaulted viaduct, built entirely in curve, stone and brick. It is located between the communes of Saint-Brieuc and Langueux, in the Côtes-d'Armor. This viaduct was designed for the Saint-Brieuc - Moncontour and Saint-Brieuc - Saint-Briac railway lines of the Côtes-du-Nord. It belongs to a series of thirteen so-called "Grognet" viaducts, characteristic of this region.
Built between 1903 and 1905 by engineer Louis Harel de la Noë, the viaduct was opened to railway traffic until 1948. It was later listed as historic monuments in 2018. Several rehabilitation projects were envisaged, notably by the association of the railways of the Côtes-du-Nord, which wanted to circulate a train while allowing its use by pedestrians and cyclists.
In 2021, the department launched a rehabilitation project to transform the viaduct into a green road, integrated into the Vélomaritime (EV4). This project, costing €810,000, led to the opening of the green road in May 2022. The viaduct is now accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, linking Cesson to the brick factory of Saint-Ilan de Langeux.
The viaduct is owned by the Côtes-d'Armor department. Its inscription in historical monuments covers the entire work, including the cadastral plots of the communes of Saint-Brieuc and Langueux. Rehabilitation works have helped preserve this heritage while adapting it to contemporary use, thus respecting its railway history.
