Building (Case DY 110): entry by order of 4 October 1993
Origin and history
The building located at 38 rue de la Boucherie in Limoges is a building before 1765, representative of the constructions dedicated to the butcher trade. Its architectural features reflect a functional organization: cellars dug in the tuff for the summer preservation of meats, dark rooms for the storage of tallow and grease, as well as attices for fodder and straw. These adjustments illustrate the adaptation of spaces to the specific needs of the profession.
The ventilation system, consisting of galetas and galleries superimposed under the frame, allowed the drying and storage of leathers and skins. This ingenious design demonstrates a technical mastery aimed at optimizing working and conservation conditions. The whole of Rue de la Boucherie was thus dedicated to a unique activity, creating a neighborhood specialized in butchery, typical of pre-industrial urban organization.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 4 October 1993, this building embodies the artisanal and commercial heritage of Limoges. Its inscription underlines the importance of preserving these traces of missing know-how and social organisation. The precise location, confirmed by the Mérimée and INSEE bases, makes it a tangible witness to the economic history of the Haute-Vienne.
