Origin and history

L'hostellerie de la Croix d'Or is an emblematic building located in Provins, at 1 rue des Capucins (formerly rue de Villers-les-Moynes). Its walls and facade, dated between 1264 and 1270, bear witness to its medieval origin. This building, now used as a restaurant, preserves remarkable architectural elements, including sill windows.

On 17 April 1931, the facade of the hospital was listed as historic monuments, recognizing its heritage value. The first mention of an innkeeper activity dates back to 1575, under the direction of Henry Le Hasteux (or Hasteur), then taken over by Pacosme Jentel in 1596. In 1622 Jehan des Rieux set up his own business, offering cuisine, pastries and cellar.

The hostellerie illustrates the evolution of commercial and tourist activities in Provins, a prosperous medieval city thanks to its role in the trade and fairs of Champagne. This type of establishment served as a place of rest and supply for travellers, merchants and pilgrims crossing the region.
