Origin and history

The Priory of Saint-Michel de Grandmont, founded in the early 12th century, is one of the best preserved monasteries of the order of Grandmont, created around 1076 by Étienne de Muret. Located in an isolated setting at 440 meters above sea level, near Lodève, it illustrates the austerity and architectural simplicity advocated by this religious order. After the dissolution of the order in 1772, the priory was attached to the bishopric of Lodève, then transformed into a farm after the Revolution.

The church, built at the end of the twelfth century, features a unique nave vaulted in a cradle and a cul-de-four bedside, without decoration. The 13th century cloister preserves its four galleries supported by double columns. After centuries of agricultural use, the priory was restored in the 19th century by the Vitalis family, then classified as a historical monument in 1981. Today, it is open to the public and can be rented for events.

The priory was founded in 1128, replacing a primitive Romanesque chapel. In the 14th century, a chapel Saint-Michel and a bell tower were added, marking a slight stylistic evolution. After the Revolution, the estate became private property, passing into the hands of families such as the Vitalis (1849-1936) or the Becs (from 1957). In the 1980s he was occupied by a community led by psychoanalyst Edgard Doulière.

The site, surrounded by forests and accessible from Lodève, has been maintained by its current owners since 2022. It bears witness to medieval monastic history and subsequent transformations, while providing a preserved setting for visitors. The paid visit allows you to discover the church, the cloister and the partially renovated convent buildings.
