Origin and history

St. Alexander-Nevsky Cathedral, located 12 Daru Street in Paris, is the first permanent Russian Orthodox church built for the Russian community in the capital. Initiated in 1847 by Father Joseph Vasilyev, chaplain of the Russian embassy, his realization was slowed down by administrative delays before obtaining the agreement of Napoleon III. Funded by international subscriptions and a personal donation from Tsar Alexander II (150,000 gold francs), it embodied an ecumenical project, attracting donations from Catholics and Protestants.

Consecrated on 11 September 1861 by Archbishop Léonce de Réval, the cathedral became a Russian cultural home in Paris, dedicated to Saint Alexandre Nevski, a national hero. In 1896, Czar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra went to France. Transformed into a cathedral in 1922 under Archbishop Euloge, it welcomed exiled white Russians and a monarchist policy. His frescoes and icons, like those of St Mark and St John on the iconostasis, are the work of Eutographer Sorokin (1821–92).

Architecturally, it blends Byzantine and Moscow styles, with a Greek cross plan and five golden bulbs symbolizing Christ and the four Evangelists. The central arrow peaks at 48 meters. The crypt, dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity, was restored between 1955 and 1956 by Albert Alexandrovich Benois and his wife Marguerite, in a style reminiscent of the Russian sixteenth century. It was classified as a historic monument in 1981 and has undergone major restoration since 1996.

The cathedral was placed under the obedience of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1931, before returning to the Moscow Patriarchate in 2019. It also houses a Francophone parish in its crypt, consecrated in 1863 but officially dedicated to the French community in 1964. A place of baptisms (like that of Gérard Depardieu in 2020), marriages (Picasso and Olga Khokhlova in 1918) and funerals (Kandinsky, Chaliapine, Nijinski), it remains a spiritual and cultural symbol of the Russian diaspora.

Its rich iconography, including paintings by Alexei Bogoliubov and frescoes of the crypt telling the Christianization of Russia, makes it a major artistic testimony. The architects Roman Kouzmine and Ivan Strohm, members of the St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts, gave him his unique identity, between Slavic tradition and Parisian integration. Today, it remains a living place, mixing historical heritage and active religious practice.
