Part of the construction containing the oven: classification by order of 17 June 1908
Origin and history
The common oven of the Baux-de-Provence is a historical monument located in the Provençal village, precisely rue des Fours. In the Middle Ages, this type of oven was a collective equipment imposed by the local lord, whose use was compulsory for the inhabitants in exchange for a fee. These ovens played a central role in daily life, serving bread cooking as a basic food, thus strengthening community ties under seigneurial authority.
Ranked by ministerial decree on 17 June 1908, this oven is one of the few material remains of this medieval practice still visible today. The protection specifically concerns the part of the building housing the oven, stressing its heritage importance. Although the available records do not specify its exact date of construction, its existence reflects the socio-economic structures of provençal villages, where the lord controlled essential production tools such as mills or presses.
